New DX-format 12.3 megapixel CMOS image sensor

The newly designed sensor delivers outstanding resolution and detail. The professional quality ISO sensitivity ranges from 200-3200, and can be pushed to ISO 100-6400 equivalent to expand shooting versatility. The sensor even has its own cleaning function to prevent image-degrading dust particles building up on its surface.

EXPEED image processing

Our acclaimed digital image-processing technology has been optimised for the D90 to ensure high-quality, high-speed processing and enhance other powerful features, including Face Detection and Live View.

D-movie mode

With our exclusive new D-Movie function you can shoot HD 720p (1280 x 720 pixels), 640 x 424 pixels or 320 x 216 pixels movies at the professional smoothness of 24 frames-per-second in motion JPEG format. Compared to the average camcorder, the far larger image sensor on the D90 offers higher image quality, a shallow depth of field and exceptional ISO performance while recording in low-light conditions. NIKKOR’s wide range of lenses offers great variety from fisheye to wide-angle to super-telephoto, adding more scope for creativity and emotional impact to your movies. Movies can even be played on the camera with sound, thanks to its uniquely powerful speaker / microphone system.

Scene Recognition System with Face Detection

The D90’s Scene Recognition System is inherited from our flagship D3 and D300 cameras. It uses a state-of-the-art 420-pixel RGB sensor to analyse colour and brightness information in the scene you want to capture, and then optimises focus, exposure and white balance as you release the shutter. Combined with the new Face Detection technology, it ensures superb definition and accuracy in all your people pictures.

Easy-to-use Live View mode

Live View mode delivers a bright, crisp image to the D90’s 3-inch, 920k-dot, wide-view angle LCD to give you the flexibility of shooting without having to look through the viewfinder. Three contrast-detect AF modes let you focus on any point in the frame, and if you’re using NIKKOR Vibration Reduction lenses you’ll also enjoy the benefit of VR-smoothed images on the screen.

Picture Control System

Customise the look and mood of your images with this easy-to-use system, featuring six options: Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome, plus our new Portrait and Landscape modes.

Active D-Lighting

This Nikon-exclusive technology accurately restores detail in shadow and highlight areas by localising tone control while you’re shooting. Choose from four levels, including new Extra High, as well as manual or auto.

11-point AF system

Our versatile and incredibly practical 11-point AF system offers fast and precise autofocus coverage across the frame, thanks to the Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus module. A choice of AF-area modes copes with virtually all shooting situations: single-point AF for stationary subjects, dynamic-area AF for moving targets, and auto-area AF for spontaneous shooting and 3D tracking.

96% coverage viewfinder

The precise, eye-level pentaprism viewfinder offers approximately 96% coverage, and you can activate a built-in, 16-frame grid display to help you compose superbly balanced shots, too.
